It is a picture of what I see, and I want you to see it with me. If you are unable to see it, then let me turn it into reality, so you can see it too. This painting is simply a record of what was going on in my head at a certain moment. Once I held fantasies about many things: a person, a piece of paper or even an academic field. Later, these expectations and fantasies collapsed one by one. It is difficult to accept that the things valued the most are fading, the goals aspired to the most are no longer challenging, and once-perfect creations are turning into unfixable flaws. Now I compare my visions with reality. I began to re-examine these issues. My disappointment about immortality seems to show that I have never done anything blindly. I grow up and started to see more of the reality of things, see the plurality of facades. Now I live within the “fantasy” rather than standing below it. I used to feel envy towards a lot of people; those people who live in their perpetual “visions,” and therefore gain a lot of expectations and energy. I still do now, but it does not matter. It described an internal problem. As a procrastinator, I scheduled my time to force myself to get rid of it. It turned out to be effective indeed, and everything could be ticked off one by one under management. Meanwhile, there was a 75% perfection threshold in my head, and I was already trying very hard to get the 100% down to the 75% so that material could be turned in or presented on time. However, I realized that this 75% threshold in my head was getting higher and higher, and thus the check boxes and 75% were fighting. In this painting, I described an uncomfortable feeling, as if I was sleeping with my eyes open, as if I was getting stuck in a huge, sticky, soft but sharp net. This net was enlarged during finals or deadlines. Skin, hair, nails, and teeth fall off over time while new tissue grows. This is a process similar to the loss and accumulation of human memory. Although all the details fade away as time passes by, unfinished obsessions remain, and then you try to use all kinds of ways to recover your loss. Think about tearing off a barb of your hand, half of which has already fallen off, but you still wonder if you should tear it off or push it back to the nail. This piece was made in December 2021 at Studio. The original plan was to fix the porcelain tiles in complete forms on the wall with nails. Some parts were broken during the installation process, so I used yarns to patch, reorganize, and modify. If you ask me in 2021, I would say I care about “patching.” I believe that when things have fallen apart, you should repair them. As long as you keep repairing, achieving a certain degree of completeness is possible through the act only. Two years later, however, I no longer see the necessity of “patching” or achieving some unfinished obsessions in my life. I use “the lovely bone” to record things that I consider interesting and translate them into sculptural forms in ceramics. I made this piece of bone-inspired by the lives of the women around me. Its shape is inspired by the female pelvic bone. The glaze on the surface aims to imitate an old cabinet with faded colors. In a patriarchial society, young women are adorned and treated as decorative objects, and their “value” deflated overtime. I am not sure how I should react to this.
